We were getting news two or three days late via the soldier’s newspaper “the Stars and Stripes”. The Germans had in fact broken through our line and were advancing into Belgium headed for the coast. Towns that we had never heard of were now coming into the news: names like Malmadey, Bastogne, Monschau, Stavelot, and the Meuse River. The 78th Division was to hold the Northern elbow of the “Bulge”. History does tell us that it took about six weeks for the Allies to stop and drive the Germans back to their original lines of Dec. l6th. There was a tremendous loss of life on both sides, but this offensive did break the back of the German Army. I will not attempt to describe any of the Battle of the Bulge but merely describe how we as members of the 307th were involved.

About the Book
All my life, I grew up listening to my father tell stories of his life, especially his wartime experiences. I knew these stories had to be put into print for future generations to enjoy. The events recounted here reflect the true voice of my father. While reading the text, I can picture a group of family and friends of all ages sitting around him, captivated by his life's stories. The favorites are always of the 78th Infantry Division and all the characters he fought with. Now these stories will be told forever.
About the Author
Roger Howard has been telling stories all his life. A lifelong resident of Massachusetts, he grew up in Melrose, raised his four children in Concord and enjoyed a long career as an educator in Brookline. In retirement, he and Beverly, his wife of 62 years, spend their time between Spring Hill, FL, Castine, ME and Maui, HI. His stories are finally in print.
