“Osu,” the teacher greets them in Japanese when they arrive. She bows her head. “You must be Tilly! Welcome to our ‘dojo’ – our school. I’m Erica, your sensei – that means ‘teacher.’ Take off your sneakers, and come on in. We’re just about to start!”
After the parents leave, Tilly walks slowly across the shiny wooden floor to the other kids. They are all wearing the same white clothes. A quiet, dark-haired boy stares at her. He looks worried, too.

About the Book
Tilly is seven years old and she always dreads the first day of everything! She doesn't like new situations or new people, but Tilly's too big to hide behind a grown-up any more, or under her blanket. Things change for her during the first meeting of a new karate class.
About the Author
Gail Noppe-Brandon, MA, MPA, MSW is founder and director of Find Your Voice, Inc. (www.findyourvoice.us), a twenty-five year old organization that offers group and individual coaching to enhance communication skills and heighten emotional intelligence across the lifespan; hundreds of young people have also been reached through the schools. A playwright and director, Gail is author of Find Your Voice & One Vision, Many Voices, and is a featured coach on the PBS program In the Mix. A documentary film about her work, Listening With Their Eyes, received the 2008 Chris Award for excellence in educational films. Gail is also a Narrative Therapist, and practices part time at a community mental health clinic in Manhattan, where she resides with her husband Scott, sons Jesse and Geordy, and two Havanese dogs: Maxxy & Dash.
Michelle Farkouh is an illustrator and graphic designer from Brooklyn. She has a degree in Illustration from Parsons the New School for Design and also studied Illustration at SACI in Florence, Italy. Michelle creates her images using oil paint on illustration board.
