“How’s your boyfriend?”
“What?”
“Don’t play dumb with me; the guy who has been trying to get his hands all over you.”
Quida knew he meant Otaru but she didn’t respond to his challenge.
“That guy has wanted to get you in the sack for as long as I can remember. I’ve been watching you, you know.”
She was silent.
“You’ve been sleeping with him, haven’t you?”
“Osagie, please stop this. I haven’t been sleeping with anyone.”
She brought the car to a halt in front of Campbell House.
The night was well lit but there wasn’t much activity on Holy Rosary road. There was no one in sight. She checked her wristwatch; it was almost 1am.
“Give me the keys.”
“What?”
“You heard me right. Give me the keys.” He snatched them from the ignition when she still hesitated.
“Get out of the car.”
Quida obeyed. So she wasn’t to be salvaged after all. She watched him get out of the car, gun in hand, as he walked to the driver seat. There he stood and looked at her.
She wanted to run. He saw it in her eyes.
“Don’t even think about it, you’ll only make this harder for yourself.”
Why won’t someone pass by right now?
No one passed by. She was alone.
She was oblivious to the shot when it came, but she felt herself going down, embracing the dark chasm. Death would give her peace.

Dorinda was asleep.
She had been reading for a while until she nodded off on her table.
She however jerked out of sleep to be hit by a strong foreboding; a thick fog of apprehension enveloped her.
A scraping sound confirmed her fears. She immediately shot out of her chair as her eyes followed the sound. Her ceiling board was shifting.
She screamed.
Would her neighbours help?
She tried reaching for the keys on her table to open her burglary proof. She was in a state of confusion. She reached for her phone and called Humphrey.
“Humphrey, someone’s in my place. He’s going to attack me.”
“Dorinda, get out of there fast!”
“I…don’t know.”
* * *
Humphrey, tear-streaked and all faced Howell, trepidation all over his face.
“It’s Dorinda, someone’s in her place.”
“Let’s get there fast.”
“We should get the police too,” Humphrey said.
“We’ll do that.”
Howell was on the verge of going loco. Things couldn’t be worse for him right now.
