Moon Gazing
Mama opened the window and peeped outside, even turned her face up toward the sky. When she pulled herself back inside again, she said with worries in her voice:
“I surely hope the sky stays clear, so we can go stargazing tonight!”
Verunka interrupted her game with empty matchboxes she was pushing on the rug, following its patterns, playing the choo-choo train at the railway station which was taking away passengers for their vacations.
“We’ll go to the observatory tonight. After dark, they open the roof, and aim the telescope at the Moon!” continued Mama.
Verunka couldn’t believe it! How can they open the roof? Mama told her they would see the Moon through the hole in the roof from so close, that it would seem as though they could touch it.
Verunka wished the evening arrived soon. She kept on peeking at the sky, and mumbled under her breath all kinds of promises, not quite certain whom she should call on. Then she decided on the Angel of the Sky:
“If you can make the sky clear tonight, I will never…stick my tongue out at anyone, really! I will never pretend I can’t hear when Mama calls she needs me to do something, really! I will never make a scary face at my baby sister to make her cry, really! I promise!” To seal her promise, she spat three times over her left shoulder because that has never, never failed.
After an early dinner, Nanny came to watch the baby, and Mama with Verunka took off.

Verunka on own recollections, meshing facts and fiction.
For children from five to a hundred and five. In 29 chapters of various lengths, illustrated by mostly medieval woodcuts with celestial motifs.
The author, born and raised in Praga Magica, studied languages and arts, performed professionally in Europe and the USA. Writing letters was her initial and intimate mode of expression and connection. As she made the United
States her home, English became her second language.
Zuzannah L’ark has recently published two volumes of short stories, Fetching Stranded Soul Pieces and Bohemian Anthem.

About the Author
