Encounter Berlin

 Summer  boat  trips  on  the  Havel  to  Peacock  Island  and  an  afternoon  walk  in  the  Tiergarten's  'English  Garden'  (nicknamed  the  Garden  of  Eden  after  Sir  Anthony  Eden)  were  idyllic.  So,  too,  was  early  evening  in  the  delightful  gardens  at  the  Radio  Tower  where,  sometimes,  strains  of  a  brass  band  playing ....                           

When  one  man  had  climbed  up  onto  the  Wall  with  his  wife,  he  said  that  once  they  were  on  it  they  had  no  further  worries  about  the  People's  Police  who  were  still  certain  to  be  patrolling  the  other  side  of  the  Wall  -  there  was  no  fear  they  would  be  shot  at  now.

A  woman  told  of  one  touching  encounter  with  a  Vopo.  Border  guards  were  just  standing  around  with  their  guns  slung  over  their  shoulders,  not  answering  any  questions. Then  a  pretty  young  girl  went  up  to  one  of  the  young  soldiers  and  gave  him  a  red  rose  which  he  took  with  some  surprise.  As  all  around  clapped  loudly,  she  planted  a  kiss  on  his  cheek  causing  him  to  blush  furiously  with  embarrassment.

It  weighs  70  tonnes,  has  a  diameter  of  7  metres  and  sits,  forlornly  and  mostly  unphotographed,  outside  the  Altes  Museum  while  people  around  take  pictures  with  their  digital  cameras (or  mobile  phones)  of  the  nearby  Berlin  Cathedral  or  of  each  other  in  diverse  poses  on  the  grass  in  the  Lustgarten.  The  object,  discovered  near  Furstenwalde  in  the  south-east  of  Berlin,  is  an  Ice  Age  granite  block  and  is  here  because  it  didn't  fit  in  through  the  door  of  the  Altes  Museum.......
