Thomas Young and the Go To Tunnel

The air felt different down here. It was hard to describe but it was almost lighter and smelt a little of toasted marshmallows, which was strange considering he was under the beach. “It should be cold and damp,” Thomas thought. When he reached the bottom of the ladder, he switched his torch back on and looked around. The soil seemed to twinkle when his torch hit it and the ground beneath his feet had a swirling effect. It looked, though surely it couldn't be, as if it was moving. Thomas took a cautious step further into the tunnel. He saw circles in the wall of the tunnel that looked like they had been cut out, then put back in. He walked a little further, hearing voices, faint at first, then getting louder. They seemed to be coming from behind the wall right beside him. He took a step back just in time to see the circle in the wall slide sideways, and out walked four of what he thought to be fairies, chattering away happily. They were about a foot tall, with crazy looking hair and brightly colored clothing. “W w what on earth?” Thomas stammered.
