Tommy Belmont checked all of his possessions were on the table before using a pen to sign the paper in front of him. It felt strange wearing jeans and a T-shirt with his old leather jacket after so long.
‘Ok, Belmont,’ the guard said. ‘On your way.’
Tommy paused gathering his worldly goods and looked at the guard with contempt.
‘Mr. Belmont to you,’ he answered.
‘Now don’t be like that, Tommy. I don’t suppose it’ll be long before you’re back here. Just remember that.’
The guard opened the door to the outside world. For the first time in six months he felt like a free man. The nine month sentence he’d received was reduced to six and he was out, never to return. The guard was wrong. Coping with the routine of prison once was enough for any red blooded, ambitious young man like Tommy. This was his new beginning. A new decade. The 1990’s.
At twenty-two he was the youngest involved in the robbery at Porky’s Exeter club. Tony only asked him to drive because Sam was sick, and yet he’d been the one to get sent down? It was something that had gnawed at his gut while idling away the time in his cell and he was determined to get answers from Tony Parson. He wanted revenge but what he would do next he didn’t know.
Where would he sleep, how would he earn a living? The little cash he’d been given might be enough for a bed in a prisoner’s hostel, but not for a decent B&B. His mum was hardly likely to welcome him with open arms, although thirty-three Stafford Road might be his only sanctuary. She’d been heart broken when he was arrested, not because of the charge, robbery was not uncommon in East London. It was the fact that he’d been arrested in Tony Parson’s bed that had hurt her.
She’d called him all the dirty names under the sun and said she never wanted to see him again. As good as her word she hadn’t once visited him. Neither had his old man, which was hardly surprising with the pubs open all afternoon. His kid brother, Bobby, had been his only visitor. Even Tony hadn’t bothered.
These thoughts churned through his mind as he waited for a bus to take him back to Hackney.

Tommy Belmont leaves prison feeling bitter and planning revenge on his boss, Tony Parson. To this end he becomes his lover. Parson is a main player in the underworld of East London, he is also a homosexual. A year later Tommy had detailed information of Tony’s drug supplier, his protection racket, porn outlets and his prostitution business. With his brother, Bobby, they set up Belmont Bros Inc. and begin the destruction of Parson’s empire.
While Tony is on holiday with his latest boy, Tommy discovers that the lease to The Circle Club is about to expire, an opportunity he cannot fail to exploit. He transfers all the licences, gambling and liquor, into his name and agrees the transfer of the lease too. Feeling confident he hires an experienced hostess from a Mayfair club to help him turn The Circle Club into a more up market venue.
He sells the protection racket to a rival club owner and expands the pornography business with the agreement of an American supplier. The drug business is left to sort itself out due to violent gangs from south of the river getting involved in their territory. Bobby has an exclusive clientele at the club who buy their drugs from him at his price.
When Tony returns with his boyfriend the struggle for power begins. The result is Tommy is seriously wounded, a dead rent boy and Bobby threatening Tony with his life.
Alan Phillips was born and lives in London. For over thirty years he worked in the television industry as Operations Controller for Granada Television, HTV and Tyne Tees Television. He started writing as a hobby after he took early retirement in 1991.
