Foreword
“One day, when I get a house with a big yard, I want to adopt a dog. “ “Why are you trying to adopt out that Pit bull?” “I had a dog, but I had to move so he had to go to the shelter.” These were comments I heard every Saturday when my husband Jim and I volunteered to help conduct mobile adoptions for a private rescue organization in California. It occurred to me that while America’s fascination with dogs is reaching fever pitch, there exists a staggering level of misunderstanding about how dogs really end up in shelters and rescues, most of which can be prevented with education and awareness. Jarring misconceptions about specific breeds prevail, and a shocking level of misinformation about rescued dogs exists that is beginning to be dismantled. My belief is that if people were better informed perhaps they would do better by a potential dog they might adopt, a dog they already own, or for dogs in their community.
While in some respects the love affair with dogs is heating up, unfortunately they are also being dumped, destroyed and discarded in alarming and record numbers. UNDERDOGS Valuable Information and Stories of Transformation is a dance of storytelling and education. These stories of some dogs beyond hope illustrate why millions of these loving beings are left homeless each year, yet they also celebrate how the lives of these animals have ultimately been transformed. The impact of these new companions on those who have chosen to love them completely is undeniable. The information contained in UNDERDOGS is designed to help all of us make better decisions on behalf of dogs which are resilient teachers and often the most beautiful of creatures.

UNDERDOGS Valuable Information and Stories of Transformation is a dance of storytelling and informational pieces designed to describe how dogs really end up in rescues and how to prevent it from happening, even to a well-loved dog. It is also a celebration of the immeasurable value found between courageous and resilient dogs and their new families when adoption is done well. Sadly, millions of homeless pets euthanized each year just didn’t meet “their person,” the one who would share a reciprocal bond with them transforming both lives in the process. UNDERDOGS will help people make better choices that will protect a beloved dog, a dog they might adopt, or those in the community.
About the Author
Caryn Casey’s writing background is diverse, but the past few years she has been channeling her passion for helping dogs in rescue by writing stories and articles for a variety of publications, volunteering at a private dog rescue in California, and co-owning the company, Much More Than Me. (www.muchmorethanme.com). She has written a column for Paw Print magazine, and contributed writing to The Cesar Milan Foundation, Pet Press, www.wuffingtonwag.com, www.pethomemagazine.com, and www.pcdogrescue.org.
Much More Than Me is a t-shirt company devoted to reinforcing the importance of giving back in the ways we all can and emphasizing awareness of others through acts of compassion and kindness. Within that frame work, the company focus is on enlightening people about the ways dogs really end up in rescues and how we can make better choices, as well as making the connection between adopting and rescuing dogs as being eco-friendly. 10% of the sale of each t-shirt is donated to rescues and shelters nationwide. Caryn is married to Jim, they have two daughters, Siera and Carlie, and dogs, Impulse and Legacy.
