“My name is Debra,” she said. They both smiled at one another and began to talk. “So, what kind of animal are you?” Trey asked. “I am a Zonkey,” Debra proudly answered. “You see, my mom is a donkey and my dad is a zebra. I got my stripes from him,” she said.

About the Book
Debra is the new animal on the farm. She is unique in a way that none of the other animals have ever seen or heard of before. Debra is thought to be inferior by some of the other animals because she is so different. She later proves that while she may be different in some ways, she is the same as all the other animals in many other ways.
About the Author
Christy Hodgson is an elementary school teacher from Trussville, Alabama. She is a 2009 graduate of the University of Mobile in Mobile Alabama. Christy was inspired by one of her professors to write the short story about a Zonkey that was born on a neighbor’s farm. She wrote about the differences in animals and how they still get along with hope of inspiring children to see the differences in others as strength and not a weakness. Christy wants to challenge children to see past the differences in others and to accept others for who they are.
