About the Book

“Looking Back” is the true story of one person’s struggle to overcome nepotism and the “good old boy” system in a Mid-West city to achieve his goal of a career in law enforcement.  The stories and accounts are a true look at some of the men and women in law enforcement and the variety of issues and circumstances they had to encounter on a daily basis.  For anyone thinking about a career in law enforcement, “Looking Back” will provide some realistic insight on how the profession really is and how it has changed over the years.

About the Author

Sgt. Larry Smith is one of three children raised by a single parent in Indiana.  After finishing high school, Larry enlisted in the Marines and later attended Ball State University.  Because of nepotism and the “good old boy” system in his hometown of Muncie, Indiana in the late seventies, achieving his goal of becoming a law enforcement officer was next to impossible.  Not taking no for an answer, Larry got his chance working the dangerous streets of South Florida for the next twenty-eight years.  After retiring in 2008, he moved back to the Mid-West and settled in Southern Illinois where he is currently a deputy assigned to a local rural school as their School Resource Officer (S.R.O.).  He is also a member of a Narcotic’s Task Force combating the methamphetamine, crack cocaine and illegal firearms epidemic.
