Once Lorraine dozed off, I took a walk to the nurses' station. I spoke to the head nurse on duty. She saw I had tears in my eyes when I spoke to her. My question to her was, “ By some chance can a miracle happen and will Lorraine be well again?” The head nurse looked at me and said, “No, Carol, I don't think there will be a miracle. I would like you to know that Lorraine has not smiled or been this happy, since your visit. She was counting the days for your arrival and telling everyone you were on the way.” I smiled at the nurse and thanked her.”
I ran down to the cafeteria with Erin to buy a cup of coffee. Returning to the room, Lorraine was sitting up and said, “Where were you, where did you go?” Both Erin and I showed Lorraine the cups of coffee. She smiled at us. I climbed on the bed and laid next to Lorraine. Erin sat at the foot of the bed. Lorraine dozed off again, but this time we did not leave the room. We both enjoyed the hot coffee, chatted and waited for Lorraine to wake up again.
Love- So Sad- Yet So Strong
After another nap, Lorraine opened her eyes. She looked at both Erin and me and smiled again. She asked us how long she was sleeping. We informed her not too long.
Erin suddenly got up, walked to the left side of her Mom's bed, looked at her Mom, and bent down to kiss her Mom's lips. After kissing her Mom's lips, she put her head down on Lorraine's chest, she lay there listening to her Mom's heartbeat. Lorraine looked over at me, smiled, and then wrapped her arms around her daughter. Lorraine again looked at me and smiled, a smile I will never forget. Erin's head remained on her Mom's chest for several minutes. I held back my tears so Lorraine would not see me crying. I did not want to spoil this special moment.
I thought to myself, “How could this be happening to such a beautiful, loving family? How could this be happening to a family so full of love?” To this day, I feel this is one of the saddest moments I have ever experienced. So very sad, yet so much love.

Love, Patience and Understanding - Words from the Heart helps us cope with many aspects in life that are unpredictable.
Love teaches us to appreciate and value our family and friends while they are here with us. Life is short and we never want to have everlasting regrets once our loved one is no longer with us. We do not want to go through life asking, “Why didn't I do that, or why wasn't I there to help when they were in need?” “Why was I too busy?”
In Patience we are taught to remain calm in many situations. Dealing with an aged parent, a crying child or a job that we dislike, can be very taxing on us. I find that when we are at the end of the rope, it is better to count to three, take a deep breath and exercise patience. Hopefully, by practicing this exercise the lack of patience will diminish. There may be times when we should do this exercise more than once a day. When we are patient, life around us seems much easier on everyone near and far.
With Understanding we realize we are not the only one who has troubles or heartaches.
To ask a question such as “Why?” and never receive an answer is very puzzling.
Such a small word, yet so powerful never knowing the answer.
The reader will gain insight of how we should count our blessings, appreciate our family and friends and never look back on what could have been. Look forward to tomorrow. A bright smile, a compliment and words of kindness, along with the soft touch of a kiss will bring comfort and peace to all.
About the Author
Carol was born in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, New York on December 9, 1946.
When she was two years old, her family moved from Brooklyn, New York to the South Jamaica housing projects, in Jamaica, New York.
She attended kindergarten in P.S. 40 and first through eighth grades in St. Monica's Parochial School. She attended Jamaica Vocational High School.
After graduation, she accepted a full-time position with the Social Security Administration. She worked there for 13 years and then decided to be a stay-at-home Mom for her two sons, Kenneth and Michael.
After being home for two years she was hired as a sales-rep for an automotive company, Motor-Rama in Ozone Park, New York where she worked for sixteen years.
Carol and her husband, Michael, reside in South Richmond Hill, New York.
