...Moving Day is the worst. It's like a never ending funeral, especially if there are a lot of goodbyes. Your relative is witnessing the death of the life they once knew. There is not enough sweetener to sugar-coat this. Keep them busy and involved; try not to let them get lost in their own thoughts - there will be plenty of time for that. When you get to the facility, go over the daily activity calendar and see what is planned. I print one out every month and go over it with my father daily. Try to equate the facility with a cruise ship - I did that, but it didn't work for me.
My father said that we had officially abandoned him. I told him that we should stick around so that the other residents could put a face with the story; I said it was a great ice-breaker: Hey, my kids just abandoned me...
