Lance started up the car and maneuvered it out of the gas station parking lot, driving out of town on a narrow gravel road that cut through the mountainside. “Let’s go up to the observation tower on top of the mountain,” he suggested to the girls. “The view up there is really cool. I think you’ll like it.”
Hannah looked out her passenger window. Three feet from the edge of the road the right shoulder dropped away, reappearing two hundred feet below. “You’re watching the side of the road, aren’t you, Lance?” she asked. “It’s pretty steep, and there aren’t any guardrails.”
But Lance didn’t answer. He gunned the engine, taking the unstable corners of the mountain road like he was on the Talladega Speedway. The faster and more recklessly he whirled around them, the more Hannah began to worry.
Macy, however, was absolutely hysterical. “You’re going to kill us!” she shrieked. “Please, Lance, slow down!”
But Lance ignored all pleas from his passenger.
The vehicle made it safely to the top of the mountain. But later that day as she thought over the wild ride, Hannah didn’t see any reason why the right wheels hadn’t slipped over the edge of the road.
Today as adult Hannah watched the terrifying drive all over the mirrors, she saw that she hadn’t been far off. The car’s tires had slipped off the edge of the road. But the only reason they hadn’t completely gone over the edge and carried the car into the ravine was because of the Glitter Man.
He had been following the car as it careened madly across the face of the mountain. When he saw the car inching closer to the edge of the road, he disintegrated into a million bits. All the tiny, sparkling particles that had composed his body assembled themselves at the edge of the shoulder, forming an extension of the road that moved with the car and kept the car’s wheels from slipping off the edge.

Hannah Matthew’s smooth, olive skin turned pasty, white, and flat. It pulled tightly over her frame, leaving behind a flawless but unnatural finish that closely resembled a mannequin’s. She reached up to touch her face, but her arm locked at the elbow, freezing her limb away from her side at a ninety-degree angle. It lodged squarely, refusing to move any further.
She tried to speak but no words would form. A cheesy smile had welded itself onto her lips, one that would lead any passer-by to believe she was quite content. She could still speak, but she couldn’t wipe the grin off her face. Her eyes remained frightened and frustrated, despite the story her face told.
She had become trapped in the body of a mannequin.
Others had been destroyed in this building as well. Nick Pearson had come here not long ago, and his entire body had become covered in thick scars.
It happens to all of us. Every day we live, we die a little more. Something makes us scarred and lethargic, stealing our vivacity and our quality of life. Is it circumstances, or is it our choices? History proves we can’t prevent our own demise. But what if there was someone who could?
