Firehouse Cat

Every day after school I would stop by to see how the cat was doing. By now one of the firefighters had given up his pillow so the cat had a soft place to sleep. Another firefighter brought a bowl from home so he had fresh water. Sparky never noticed him.

“He seems like a nice cat but he can’t stay here forever. He‘s going to need a home soon.” said the captain as he was sipping his coffee filing out different forms.

I looked at my dad and he shook his head in agreement. I knew they were right so I just kept doing my home work. Later after my home work was done I went to play with the cat. I noticed after a while he looked a little different. He wasn’t black. He wasn’t grey. He was kind of in the middle.

“Dad what color do you think the cat is?” I asked.

“He’s not black” said firefighter Myles as he was polishing the fire pole.

“He’s not grey” said firefighter Claude who was sweeping the floor.

“He looks like a cinder” said firefighter Lou from the couch.
