Chapter 1
Josh Lambert had just turned twenty four years old when he saw Norma Sutton at his company’s Christmas party. She was twenty three years old and the daughter of John Sutton, owner of Sutton Construction Company. Josh couldn’t keep his eyes off the beautiful girl the entire evening as sixty four company workers and their spouses enjoyed their socialization and meals at Twin Oaks Country Club. Norma was well aware of Josh observing her that wintry night at the Christmas party. Three times during the party she looked straight at him and smiled. Josh’s mind was made up that very night; he would ask her out on a date.
It was a few days later when Josh knocked on Mr. John Sutton’s office door. “Come in,” Mr. Sutton sounded. Josh was a bit nervous when he entered the owner’s office. “Josh, what seems to be on your mind?”
“Mr. Sutton, I have a lot of respect for you and I enjoy working for your company, but there is something that I need to ask you.”
“Ask away. What seems to be the problem?”
“There is no problem, but I couldn’t help but notice your beautiful daughter at our Christmas party. I knew you had two daughters, but I had never seen either one of them before the night of our Christmas party.”
“Only one of my daughters came to the party with my wife and me that night. The one that came to the Christmas party was Norma. She lives in a house here in Hillsdale. My other daughter, Thelma, just finished college and is still living at home with her mother and me.”
“Mr. Sutton is Norma married?”
“No, she’s not married, but she does have a boyfriend.”
“I sure hate that fact!”
“Why is that, Josh?”
“I came in here to ask you if Norma was married. If she wasn’t married I was going to ask you if it would be alright for me to become friends with her.”
“Josh, you’re a very nice young man, but I’m afraid Norma already has a boyfriend. His name is Brock Fordham. In fact, I don’t approve of him myself, but she is a grown woman and has a mind of her own. May I ask why you have an interest in my daughter?”
“Mr. Sutton, I saw her at our Christmas party, and I couldn’t keep my eyes away from her. She is absolutely beautiful, not to mention her wonderful smile. It took a lot of courage for me to come into your office and confront you concerning your daughter.”
“I know it did. I appreciate you coming to me first before ringing her doorbell. Josh, you’re a handsome young man, intelligent and you’ve got a college degree. I’m surprised that you’re not married already.”
“Mr. Sutton, I have been waiting for the right girl to come along. When I saw Norma at our Christmas party something happened to me. I don’t know how to explain it, but I can’t get her out of my mind.”
“Josh, I made you office manager for this company for three reasons. You have a college degree, you’re intelligent and the other reason is because I like you. You’ve got great potential and I believe you have a great future ahead of you. Norma’s boyfriend appears to be very jealous toward her. I’ve already told her three times that I don’t like Brock Fordham. In fact, I told him myself that I didn’t particularly like him. His comment was that he didn’t care whether I liked him or not so long as his daughter did. I’ve told Norma several times that Brock has no real future. He’s arrogant and I’ve been told that he was a college dropout. I don’t know what she sees in him. He asked me for a job about a week ago and I told him he must be kidding me because I didn’t even like him, let alone give him a job. Now you know why he wasn’t invited to our Christmas party. Josh, take my advice and stay away from that overgrown clown.”
“Mr. Sutton, with your blessing I would like to at least speak to her at her place of work.”
“Josh, I see no harm in you telling her who you are and where you work, but I advise you to not to tangle with Brock because I believe he’s capable of anything. He’s been arrested two times already for being in fights.”
“Why would Norma be interested in a man like that?”
“Who knows why one person likes another one, especially someone like Brock Fordham?”
“Mr. Sutton, when you were younger like I am now, did you ever see a female that you just couldn’t get out of your mind?”
“Yes, I certainly did! In fact, I’m married to that very woman as we speak. Becky was working in a department store in a town named Ralston. You would never be able to guess why I went into the store.”
“Why did you go into the store?”
“To buy myself some new underwear. I was walking around in the store with two packs of underwear in my hands when I saw this beautiful female about my age. She was working in the jewelry department. Without her even knowing it, she had already stolen my heart.”
“What happened, Mr. Sutton?”
“As bold as any red-bloodied man could, I walked straight to the jewelry counter and said, hello. She looked up at me and commented, ‘I see you have been shopping’. I was never so embarrassed in my whole life. In fact, I dropped one pack of my underwear on the floor. She started laughing and that’s when I
