...the churches would give all sorts of money to win the blacks in Africa to Jesus, but if they came to out country, they would not be allowed in the church. How inconsistent was that? Then Tommy was challenged by his friends. "You are telling us that we are wrong in what we are doing. Why aren't you telling the Black Panthers they are wrong since there is talk that they may try to burn down Dallas." Tommy realized they were right. "Absolutely! They need to know the Lord." He decided to visit the Park in South Dallas where they were known to congregate. A bystander pointed the group out to him. Later Tommy recalled, "I didn't have the slightest idea what I would say to them, but I prayed the Lord would speak for me." He ran toward the gang, hands stretched out, shouting, "Where in the world have you guys been? I have been looking all over town for you!" They looked startled, but he continued, "I know something about everyone of you that you don't know!" He did have their attention. "What is it?" the leader asked in a menacing tone of voice. "Are you ready for it?" Tommy asked. After pausing for a moment with all eyes glued to him, he made this statement, "Jesus Christ loves you and He has a purpose and a plan for your life, and what you are doing does not fit into God's plan." With varied looks, some of disdain, some of bewilderment, and others with a light of hope, Tommy continued. "Now how many of you would like to know about God's plan for your life?" He sensed that the Holy Spirit was in control. Several of the gang wanted to hear more about Jesus. It may be a coincidence, but Dallas never was burned down.
