"I'll be back in a few days." Steve Bertmen told his wife Marcy as he caressed her cheek and kissed her forehead. The touch and kiss of comfort as you are about to leave the one you love behind. He hated to tell her good bye, but he needed to put food on their table. And the day he would return to her, it made it that much more blissful to run into her arms again after having to say good bye.
"I hate it when you have to leave." Marcy told him.
"I know, I do too, but this might be the one meeting that will make me partner."
"I know." She says looking toward the floor.
Marcy was always so understanding about Steve's work. He was in design sales, and he was about to land a big deal with Sony. If he could convince them that his plans where the best for their company, he would make partner with his boss. That meant more money, something we as people will always need. But some things are not easy, and landing a deal with Sony was not going to be one bit.
Steve had worked on his paper for weeks but he was never satisfied with it. He kept returning to his laptop correcting this and that, and before he knew it he was rewriting the whole presentation.
"Look, I'll get a motel and call you every night from there, okay?" Steve would try to comfort her all he could every time he would go out of town, but no matter what he said, she would still worry about him.
It wasn't that she was afraid he would cheat, she knew he would never do that. It was the fact that the world is a vial place, and there was no one you could trust anymore. After all, he would dress in these nice suits, and carry a briefcase. People see that and think you got money, then they want to rob you, and maybe kill you. The truth of human nature is not a fairy tale with a happy ending. It would always have a tragic event that would take place. There is no stopping what might happen to you, and Marcy knew that, but you could try to avoid it in her eyes.
"I'll be fine." He told her. She soon felt a little comfort and gave him a tender kiss.
He loved those kisses. He held on to them every trip. It gave him something to want to come home to. But it also made time go by really slow, always waiting for the clock to end the day, and the sun to bring another tomorrow. Counting the days to his wife's loving hug. The one you only see on lifetime, where the lovers finally find each other on the beach, and run to each others arms in slow motion.
"What time does your plane leave?" She asked.
"I have to get a early flight, so I'll leave at six AM."
"Well, I guess we'll have to make this a night to remember." She told him.
She hugged him again, and kissed the middle of his neck. Steve could feel something move in his Levi jeans, a reaction she would always cause when she gave the neck kiss. The kiss would give him a tingling sensation down his spine and goose bumps on his arms. He would tilt his head to the side she had connected her lips to, and she loved it every time he would do that.
