Imagine a small forest creature dwelling in his own rustic cottage far beneath a 100 year old farmhouse. Now add to this the fact that he doesn’t know how he got there. He has frightful memories or ‘pretends’ as he calls them, that haunt him every day. “Did that really happen?” Those are the four words that await him when he wakes each morning. He is very sad, frightened and lonely and finds no answers that would comfort him. 'Not knowing anything' is probably the worst place someone can possibly be. There is nothing to hold on to. No reason for being. Just each empty day turning into the next.
The story opens with movement and noise inside the farmhouse far above him. Strange noises that somehow seem distantly familiar to him. He huddles in a corner and covers himself with an old piece of a quilt. As he quivers from fear, he begins to feel a warmth gently calming him. He remembers feeling this comfort before, but has no idea of where it comes from. His mind now begins to fill with bits and pieces of memories or ‘his pretends’. He pictures strange things moving the boxes and furniture back and forth. These things are tall and are speaking. He remembers what speaking is. He pulls the quilt off and looks at the ceiling while exclaiming “People!!” He starts to cry with joy as the bits and pieces in his mind begin to form pictures. “I remember this, I remember this!”. I think I remember this. Please don‘t let this be a pretend!”
The noises continue and this lonely fellow doesn’t feel as empty as before. The sounds are now welcome to him and he remembers he has a name. Mar-- Marmo-- Marlor-- Marlen---MARLAND! “That’s it, Marland!! I’m Marland. Someone put me here in this cottage and they told me they’d return when the time was right. Alright, he shouted!” The people and noises were now a comfort to him. “Could this be the right time, he wondered?”
You see, Marland does have a way to go outside from the safety of his cottage. But it is a very scary, dark tunnel and he really didn’t make the journey very often. He was now wondering if he should go through the heavy locked door and slip through the tunnel for a peek outside.
What adventures await him as his future unfolds? Come and join him as he finally learns the answers about his life that have always haunted him. The story opens with a new family moving into the 100 year old farmhouse right above Marland‘s cottage. Marland can recall memories or maybe his ‘pretends’ of other families living there also. Some bring fear with them. His memories leave him not only frightened, but excited as well.. What adventures await him as he faces the uncertain future? About the Author
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Since she was a young child, Kathleen had a love for ‘making a story’ as she called it. This was back in the 1950’s when playing outside and making up adventures or just adding to the plots that already surrounded her was not only fun, but held a very magical place in her life. She understood that real was real and make-believe was make-believe, but she loved combining the two. It was her special place where no one else could enter unless she invited them to join her. And join her they did. What wonderful adventures they all had together! After supper and she was comfortably pajamed, she would take out her white lined paper and a well used pencil to place those “mostly true” stories right where they belonged. She could relive them again and again each time she read them. Today Kathleen has authored many articles and was first published at age15, but this is her first attempt with a children’s novel. She is an author, wife, mother and grandmother. She has a deep faith in The Lord that is at the core of her life. She is 62 now being diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis nearly 30 years ago. She has never allowed it to steal any of her 'good or even the hard times, as all of these have helped to bring her to where she is today. Being raised in a small Massachusetts town she now resides with her husband on their 100 year old retirement farm in West Virginia. Her love for family and God along with her writing, keeps her days filled. Antiques and primitive furniture surround their home and they love collecting them. She appreciates knowing there is always an unknown story behind each piece she finds.
