By then, I had no idea where I was. Was I way behind enemy lines? Most likely. How far behind? The sun had set, and the last light was disappearing. I didn't know what airfield these guys came from, maybe Nomeny or Moyenvic, but it seemed like they should be getting along on home and forgetting all about me. They must be low on fuel by now, too. I sure was. Two of them had that same idea. I saw them turn away and head almost due east. But, my principle antagonist was not so generous. He was still on my tail and firing like he meant it. I couldn't shake him. He seemed to be anticipating every move I made. Maybe I wasn't as experienced as I thought I was. Maybe my flying career wasn't going to last as long as I had hoped it would. Then, he scored the hit he wanted. My engine started spewing oil, and I knew I was just about through flying for the day. I hoped I wasn't just through period! What little I could see of the fields below me looked fairly level. Farmland, I presumed. With the smoke and oil pouring from the engine during my gradual descent, I was sure my German friend knew I was finished, and he, too, had to be sucking air from his fuel tank. I hoped he didn't stick around too long to observe his handiwork. I then proceeded to crash!

About the Book
It's 1918. An American pilot, flying for the Lafayette Flying Corps, finds himself fighting for his life in what could be his last dogfight. Escape seems impossible - a crash seems inevitable. He will need a lot of help and a lot of luck to survive.
About the Author
Duane L. Gentner was born and raised in Chelsea, Michigan, the second of three boys. At 15, he contracted infantile paralysis, which kept him from doing what he really wanted to do - join the Air Force and become a pilot. However, he did eventually satisfy his desire to fly and gained his Private Pilot License. Duane spent 39 years with United Airlines, followed by five more years as a consultant at their Flight Training Center in Denver. He lives in Parker, Colorado with Carole, his wife of 52 years, and living nearby are his daughter, son-in-law, son, daughter-in-law and two magnificent grand children.
