We often wondered where Verdi's parents came up with his name but we never remember asking them and neither does Verdi. As we were working on this book we went to a Norwegian dictionary to verify what my dad had told me a couple of years ago. We found “verdi” and sure enough in Norwegian it means “value” or “irreplaceable.” We as family and friends know this is a very good definition for the life of Verdi Gilbertson but Verdi is not one to brag. To him the word “value” does not describe him but rather it means “value of family.” We know this is true because Verdi values his family above anything and everything. He lets us know very often that it is his family that makes life a joy. Of the many accomplishments he has had in his life, the greatest one he claims is his family and extended family. Another title of this book could be Verdi “Values of a Family Man.” In these stories Verdi tells many of the interesting stories which include the family and friends that have helped shape his life. You could search all over the place you will find not find many with the name of Verdi or another person just like Verdi Gilbertson.

About the Book
I chuckled quite a few times reading these stories and imagining Grandpa telling them. Eric Gilbertson MIT 2008, 2010 Grandpa's book is fun to read. It's just amazing all that Grandpa went through as a line man on the telephone company. It makes hiking up Mount Washington in January seem like hiking along the beach. Matthew Gilbertson MIT 2008, 2010 Grandpa doesn't talk about the fighting during the World War II. He talks about the many towns he went through and the people he met. About the Author
Verdie Gilbertson was born in Mandt Township near Milan and Montevideo, Minnesota September 7, 1923. During his eighty six years he has been a husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He counts his family as the greatest accomplishment that he and his wife Agnes have. In addition to his family stories, this collection of stories chronicles his days as a farm kid during the drought and Depression years, experiences in the Army infantry during World War II, over sixty years as a small airplane pilot. His days as a telephone company worker, Boy Scout leader, camper, woodcarver, fisherman and many more that shaped his life. He lives in Montevideo, Minnesota and spends much of his time in his new woodcarving studio.
