Charlotte was foundering in turbulent waters. She was standing at the bank of windows that ran along one entire wall of her new apartment. Where only yesterday she had stood looking out over the Monte Mario hill on the other side of the Tiber, feeling safe - in charge, watching the sun rise and set as if by her command, she now felt a shiver of doubt run through her. She felt small and alone standing there, a creature from another world come to visit a city with its beings sheltered under the roofs and walls that had been built and lived in by the long blood line of their ancestors. The leaves on the plane trees lining the riverside drive were out again. It was already hot during the day. She watched it all and wondered at the infinitesimal shifts that could make such a difference in life. Theo had put her in touch with herself, had integrated the inner creature with the spectator who had regulated her actions. For a magic few weeks she had felt full of promise, pleased with her physical self. He had shown her the secret of herself. Now, one small tessera added to the mosaic of her life had shattered the pattern.

About the Book
This story follows the drama of a young girl from a small town in Ohio who seeks to find color in her life through a trip to Rome, Italy. Arriving with two friends in the ancient city, she falls in love with the daily drama of life there. They plan to spend a year abroad before returning home to settle into their real lives. Her two friends leave after a year, but Charlotte is in love with Rome. Its colors, its history, its people and how they live each day is fascination to her. Life seems more exciting as she becomes part of the daily adventure. Experiences await her that she never could have imagined in her previous life. She came here as an innocent, inexperienced traveler, in Rome she becomes a part of its history.
About the Author
D.N. Sarmiento began the grand adventure of her life at the University of Michigan, where she met the partner of her life and obtained her degree in Romance Languages and Literature. She and her husband, who became a university professor, and their four children, were avid seekers of historic spots around the world. They lived in Spain for a year, and in Italy for twenty years before returning to the U.S. to pursue a more settled life. She taught English Composition and Spanish in several universities. She has won first and second place in various literary contests for short stories. At present she is living in Denver, Colorado.
