The NASA official pulled Wanda along to a strange elevator.
“It’s not like the elevator for sightseers.” The door closed behind her. She faced three astronauts in different sizes – like the three bears – a tall one, a middle-sized one and a short one.
I feel like Goldilocks. Wait till they find out I don’t belong.
They stood in spacesuits, toothpaste-white like hers. Their helmet shields of black plastic hid their faces.
“Looks like we have our fourth man for the trip to Mars,” Glen said as the elevator surged upward. Wanda gripped the silver railing.
It’s my brother, Glen’s, elevator for the trip to Mars, Wanda realized, and he’s the middle-sized bear.
“You’re William Runner, right?,” Glen said. Wanda tried to shake her head, ‘no’, as the elevator suddenly stopped. Her head shook ‘yes’ instead.

About the Book
In the year 2056, Wanda Roland, 13, is accidentally put on the spaceship taking her 23-year-old brother, Glen, and his companions, Mark James and Jim Rudolf, to Mars. Glen is angry to find his sister instead of a boy, scheduled to come with them. Wanda is convinced that it is all right to go to Mars, even though her parents object because of her migraine attacks. She is determined to find water on Mars.
