Rested Upon a Hammock
In clover, the royal orange sun glares the surrounding sand.
The world has been set aside for this moment of promised peace.
I lie upon a hammock, knit of beige, faded tan.
I've come to grips of bliss, my yearning body at ease.
The canvas I have for so long yonder.
Content to a beautiful exile of further sculpture.
Grateful, to live this day that one may only ponder.
Replenished from being severed.
My trail of footprints are forgotten with second wind.
Frail they were, marking a chosen path.
Created by my shadow, a faceless twin.
Breathing the moment, leaving the past.
I've searched for this peace of mind.
Steadily, yet passionately underneath the sunshine.
Beside my place of rest, an iced glass of sugar cane.
A slice of orange adds a scentful pinch, sweetening my appetite.
Untouched, harmonized without a name.
Drifting as I sway, a remarkable day.
My hands are cupped together, rested above my forehead.
I am in comfort, clothed in a lightful shirt, khaki pants, my sandals lay upon the sand.
Sonnets brew about my thoughts, my closed eyes no longer shed.
Upon the land with open hands.
Rested upon a hammock, inheriting life's glory.
Brittles of the ocean's water sprinkle my skin.
I am eminently cozy, imagining a cloud story,
Paving its canvas of my fallen sins.
A rhythm of whispers calm my tamed notes,
Poetic passages, sketching sincere songs, singing sorrow.
My dear friend, to these pages I cope,
Upon a hammock I sway a hopeful tomorrow.
The Second Chapter
I must not be captured.
Shadowing behind, it ventures closely.
The saga continues, the second chapter.
Sleek. A cunning, mystique figure approaches me.
Its page is elusive, fragmented thoughts scattered,
Sinking its symbolic characters deep down to dwell.
Grasped in its hand is a personified dagger,

About the Author
David Chiem was born in San Jose, California, in 1983. At the age of 19, he published his first collection of poetry entitled, In the Depths of My Eyes. Since then, his writing has evolved to form poetry of added complexity and articulation. His second book is an extension of his growth and passion for the written art. In attempts to unveil the blossom of resplendency, Chiem hopes to inspire his readers through messages of personal struggles, raw emotions, and social injustices.
