What you do is up to you.
People feel powerless because they think they have to go to work, have to play with their kids, have to love their partners. But, in fact, you don’t have to do any of these things!
When you wake up in the morning, for example, you actually have a couple of choices. One of them is to stay in bed; another is to get out of bed and go to work. Remember that the choice is always yours, and with every choice, there are consequences – some perceived as positive and others as negative.
If you choose to get out of bed and go to work, then you must remember that you alone made this choice. As you’ll recall, there is nothing that you have to do!
The problem is that most of us are oriented to the consequences of our actions (or lack of action) and this orientation drives our behavior. Instead of asking, What is the right thing to do?, we look at the possible consequences of our choices and decide, Ooh, I don’t like that consequence; that will make me feel pain! So I’d better do it/not do it!
We go immediately to how we will feel about the consequences, instead of truly considering the question, What is the right thing to do? Because we may not like the consequence of one choice, we forget that it is, in fact, optional. You don’t have to go to work just because your boss will be angry if you don’t. She may indeed be angry, but it is still an option for you to choose to go or not.
The fact is, you can choose to do what you want in your life. When you come from a vertical perspective, you exercise your free will, the power of choice that we all have. You have control over your life when you empower yourself by exercising your power to make choices.
Balance and dynamic tension
You cannot fully activate your power if you are constantly distracted and not aligned with your inner vision. I often hear people say that they wish they had more balance in their lives because their current state of affairs is filled with unwanted tension and stress. When prompted for a deeper explanation of what they really want, they express their discontentment with how long or how hard they are working, and/or the lack of time they have with their families even when they are at home.
In fact, what they really want is to have their cake and eat it too – they want to achieve success in their chosen field (by focusing their energy on it) and also have the discretionary time to be with their family, go for hikes in the forest and do whatever their hearts desire. We all need to accept that when we choose to focus more energy in one area, it will mean less time, energy and focus in another area.
