We lived in a two-room shack in Ramer, Alabama that my father and mother had built on weekend trips made from Montgomery, 26 miles away. We had no electricity and no glass windows. There was no running water or inside toilets. Our windows were permanently closed in the winter with wooden shutters, to keep out the cold, making it pitch black dark any time there wasn't a kerosene lamp burning.
This Christmas was different. There was a whole new dimension added to our excitement. Our Father had explained to the kids that he had an idea of how we might have light in our Christmas tree. He wasn't sure that he would be able to pull it off, or that it would work, but he was going to try.
Looking back at how Christmas is celebrated now, I am not sure why the Christmas season was so important to us kids, as we had very little money and received few gifts. It was about cooking, enjoying family and being out of school. It was the way the air felt, the way the trees looked, the way the dog wanted to come inside and lay close to the old wood stove. The weather was cool enough to enjoy being inside.
Excitement grew in the hearts of the kids as each day passed. A light in our tree. This would definitely be our best Christmas, it it actually happened.

About the Author
A Father, Grandfather, Son, Uncle, Brother, Friend, but to most Paul Story is known as a storyteller. He is a retired businessman entrepreneur who grew up very poor and worked hard from a young age to become very successful and give positive influence to many on his way up. He attributes his success to parents who taught him the importance of commitment to a job well done, family closeness and caring for others and their feelings. Even though his beginning was meager he grew up with a wealth of appreciation for the things that really matter. At the encouragement of his children, he has begun to share some of his special childhood memories with others besides them.
