About the Book

Dear Reader,

“Resilience Matters” is a story - my story - that has been in my heart and on my mind for more than sixty years. I originally decided to write it for my children and grandchildren; however, many have told me it would be inspirational reading for others who have led a less than privileged life.

In these pages you will join me on a journey through the foster care system, an abusive first marriage, and the ordeal of breast cancer, which included multiple reconstructive surgeries. At this point in my life, I am happy to report I have arrived at a place of perfect contentment.

It is my hope that those who read this book will find the courage to put themselves first, while honoring their personal histories that live in their hearts and souls.

I also hope that my readers will learn to always hold onto their dreams.  Dreams can come true. Mine did!

Joanne Bellontine

About the Author

Joanne Bellontine retired from a successful career in corporate America as a Chief Operating Officer of an executive search firm. Her career encompassed both the nonprofit and corporate worlds. She lives in a two hundred year-old farm house in Carmel, NY with her husband, Joseph Bellontine, a retired guidance counselor and teacher. Joanne is a sister, mother, stepmother, grandmother, and friend. She lived a difficult, but full and rewarding life. Her story is well-worth the telling.

Initially, Ms. Bellontine, a first time author, began her memoir in order to make peace with her past and gain clarity about her life. Over time, the memoir evolved into something even more meaningful. It became her gift to her children and grandchildren, a way of explaining who and why she is. It’s a kind of map of her life, a map to a world completely foreign to them. Above all, it’s a testament to the value of tenacity, humor, and faith when dealing with the most difficult challenges of life.

Her grandchildren are young. It hasn’t yet occurred to them to ask about the intricacies of her family tree. For example, why do six siblings – their aunts and uncles - have five different fathers, why were they given up, how did they all find each other again, and other questions of that nature. When the time comes, her memoir will provide answers and insight. In addition, Ms. Bellontine’s memoir may serve to inspire young people in difficult family situations and offer the gift of hope to those in despair.
