Lena: Oh yes! Before we went to school, we had to get up every morning at 4 o'clock and clean up. We had to get up at 4 o'clock brother, and do all the work. Then, walk to school 4 miles. And, when we get home in the evening, yes indeed! We had to feed the chickens. The boys had to feed the cows and the hogs. See, we didn't stop in the kitchen. you didn't get nothing to eat. When you got home, you undressed and you went to work after we walked them 4 miles. Put the wood on the porch, feed, do everything outside, before you come in the house and before we get supper. And, after supper, you hit them books because my daddy was right there. And, you had to study. And, all of us knew our ABC's before we started the school.
See, I can't kill no snake, I'm so scared of them. I jumped in the car, we hadn't got the phone hooked up then. I jumped in the car and head out to the neighbors house and got Mr. Cephas When I got to his house, I was out of breath. I rode in the car. And, I told him to come quick. His wife said - what's wrong Lena? I said - there's a snake in the house. She went to laughin' because she wasn't scared of snakes. He got his shot gun. She said - honey, don't take your shot gun and tear up Lena's house. I said - I don't care what you tear, I don't care what you do, just as long as you get that snake, you can tear up everything.

C.M. McWright- Received a BA degree with Distinction from San Jose State University1982 obtaining a degree in Afro-American Studies. He also holds a Nursing Degree from Evergreen Valley College, San Jose, California 1985.He has practiced psychiatric nursing for over twenty-four years. Clarence is currently part of the Counseling Ministry at Mt. Moriah Baptist Church in Houston, Texas. Clarence and his wife Fe reside in Richmond, Texas.
