You'll Never Know

It seemed ages before they even moved Sylvia - I supposed they were trying to stem the bleeding but eventually she was put on to the stretcher and they hurriedly carried her out and Alan followed to go into the ambulance with her.

It was then that a policeman with a police woman came up to me and taking out his note book very formally asked me for my name, address and where I worked

 “I believe it was you who found Miss Crow.  Could you explain why you were looking for her and what brought you here?”

I felt flustered.  They were both so cold and official and I think the shock of everything was beginning to kick in.  My voice came out all shaky as I explained

 “Sylvia regularly attends Church here in her lunch hour.  I work with her and when she was late getting back my boss told me to come down here to check all was well.  Do you know what’s the matter with her?  All that blood - could it be some sort of haemorrhage?”

“Your friend has been stabbed. Now I will require you to come to the station with me to make a statement.”

I couldn’t believe my ears.  Sylvia had been stabbed!  Sylvia had been stabbed! I couldn’t take in anything that was being said now.  Suddenly the room started to move, there was a rushing sound in my ears and I felt so hot.  My legs refused to hold my weight so I sat down heavily on the pew behind me as the world seemed to turn red and the police woman’s face appeared very close to me.  I could see her mouth was moving but there was no voice and when I tried to speak my mouth just wouldn’t work at all.  I was now freezing cold and then someone put some water on my forehead and then some more water for me to drink.  The water worked like magic I began to see again and the noise in my ears gradually faded.
