Several people were sitting around and having a sandwich and drink as they talked. He chose one of the stools at the soda fountain. The waitress asked his choice. He ordered a cherry coke. He watched in nostalgia as she made it the old fashioned way of the “soda fountain”. The man sitting one stool away from him who had been talking to his friend turned to him in a polite gesture to include him and asked, “Just passing through?”
“Not really. I’m actually here on business. I’m waiting to see Todd Barns.”
A couple of the guys looked at each other and the man said, “I’m Sam Stockton. This here’s Toby Jones. Since you’re here to see Todd, it must to be about real estate, right?”
“Well, yes it is, but how did you know?”
“Oh, that’s easy. That’s all he does is real estate.” Toby Jones was nodding his head behind Sam in agreement.
Johnny continued with understanding, “Well, seems I’ve inherited some property…an old ranch, I believe.” Everything got quiet.
Sam looked at Toby, then back at Johnny, “Not the old Carstairs place?”
Johnny looked puzzled, “That’s the name on the deed.” The hubbub started again, but with a different subject. It seemed he was the center of interest now.
Sam had a strange look on his face now. He glanced around at Toby, then looked Johnny in the eye, “Mister, do you know anything about that place? I mean, has anyone told you about it being…I mean, well, the strange things that have gone on out there?” Johnny shook his head. Sam leaned on the counter as he almost whispered, but was audible, “The dern place is haunted!”
Johnny looked at Sam and Toby almost not believing what he heard. Here in the modern world we live in, people still believe in ghosts? He held back a smile and said, “Sam, I can’t believe you mean that.”
“Oh, I do, I do! The whole 500 plus acres is weird. Strange! Nobody goes near it. I mean nobody but nobody would ever even hunt on it.”

About the Book
A Confederate Captain and his patrol are betrayed by his own commander and subsequently is ambushed by a Yankee Captain and his troops. They murder said Confederate patrol and bury them in a muck bog. The Yankees had taken contraband gold and thus the theft was blamed on the Confederate Captain (Jesse Carstairs) and his squad and thusly considered thieves and deserters.

About the Author
Verne Foster is retired Air Force and Firefighter that became interested in historical locations and events while researching his family genealogy. He became quite interested in the Civil War era when he found his paternal grandfather was a Union captain and his maternal great grandfather was a Corporal in the Confederate Army. The Lost Confederate is his second book and is differentiated from “The Saga Of Robert E” in that it is a work of complete fantasy and not an historical novel. You will enjoy the mischievous “ghost” of “Jessie Carstairs and his antics, the intrigue of young Johnny Carstairs as he meets “Jesse” and also proves his “Battleworthiness” in the “Fourth Dimension”.
