“Run!” Mutt barked to puppy. “Run as fast as you can! When that truck shows up, dogs disappear behind those doors and are never seen on the streets again. RUN!”
Puppy ran as fast as her little legs would carry her. She couldn’t keep up with her big friend. She saw him race on ahead of her, then duck down an alley. Suddenly Puppy felt something around her neck, and it stopped her in her tracks. The rope around her neck got tighter. She couldn’t get loose no matter how much she twisted. Puppy looked up and saw a big man with a serious face standing over her. He was holding a pole that was attached to the rope around her neck. With horror, Puppy realized the man was taking her to the scary green truck with many doors.

About the Book
What Ever Happened to Puppy is written to bring to light the results of mistakes frequently made, usually with good intentions but which often result in fear and confusion for the animals. It is written from a dog’s point of view and follows Puppy from her first home to the shelter. She was given as a surprise birthday gift (bad idea), not trained (uh, oh!), then unwanted. She is dropped at a park, wanders the streets, hooks up with a street savvy dog, and gets caught by animal control. Her new life is strange, she is frightened, but soon realizes that she is safe and cared for. As all the animals do, Puppy hopes she will find her forever family. But she is torn about leaving her new friend, Mutt. What do you think will happen?
About the Author
Susan Trotta-Gilbert has had a long and active passion for animals and their welfare that began in Australia where she raised orphaned kangaroo joeys. A former Humane Education Manager at a local Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), she is diligent about teaching compassion for all creatures. Susan has volunteered at the local zoo since 1994. As a docent, she educates the public about the animals and conservation. She continues to foster kittens for 2 shelters, specializing in bottle-feeders. She and her husband, Greg, a zookeeper, have rescued all kinds of animals over the years. Currently, they are owned by 1 dog, Tilly, one puppy, IsaBelle, and 1 kitten, Simon.
