With three days notice, the author reported to the White House for duty as the first Coast Guard Aide to the President. During his eighteen months as aide, he kept a diary of his White House experiences. Several books have been written about the Presidents and the White House, but few have been written by someone with the scope and familiarity of the president’s activities, as his military aide. In particular, President Nixon’s military aides were given great responsibility in coordinating the use of military resources. The aide also carried the briefcase, known as “the football.” It contained documents for the President’s use in responding to an attack or national emergency.

Alex Larzelere is a retired U.S. Coast Guard captain, who served on seven cutters, five of which he commanded. In 1971, he was assigned as the first Coast Guard officer to serve as a military aide to the president.
