About the Book

This book is about the working qualities of the Airedale Terrier. From coursing coyotes with greyhounds, to lion hunting in Montana, to bird hunting in Wyoming, on to wild boar hunting in Texas, the Airedale terrier can do it all. Some even qualify for serious protection/attack work as in Shutzhund/French Ringsport; and when you find an Airedale that qualifies for protection work they are generally unbeatable for their size.

About the Author

The author obtained his first Airedale, "Louie", in 1971. When he would be out in public, some of the "old folks", would say, "those used to be some tough dogs". Not knowing he bought a dog with "history", the author began to investigate the history of the breed, only to find out that the Airedale is a dog of amazing history and potential. While wanting a good watchdog, the Airedale can also be a hunter, guard, and companion. The dog shows provided some information, but the one thing that is soon learned from attending dog shows is that the best dog, does not always win. In fact, an obviously flawed dog can "win", over an obviously better dog. The politics are rampant.

So that led the author to investigate the working dog clubs. The schutzhund, ringsport people were skeptical that Airedales could do the work, but there were some Airedales that had made some progress in schutzhund, but most, if not all of them were imported dogs. Upon researching the splendid qualities of the Airedale, it makes one wonder why they are not more popular. From extreme pain tolerance, to overall body strength, coupled with the desire to hunt, retrieve, protect, the Airedale terrier can perform as well or better than specialists of their breed. The author has shipped dogs from Michigan to California, to New York and to Europe, all the while, expounding on the virtues of the magnificent Airedale Terrier. Upon publication of this book, the author has had over 40 years in Airedales; breeding, training, hunting, and loving every minute of it.
