One cold January evening I was sitting in my condo after returning from a twelve-step meeting. I was reflecting on the table study that night when there was at was a knock at the door. When I opened the door, it was Camille. Whoa! My first thought was, why is she here? I hesitated for a moment but let her in. She started trying to get us back together.
“Camille, I thought I made it clear we are done. Please stay out of my life!”
She replied, “Tony, I love you. I want to get back together.” Mind you, no apologies for the past, no gratitude for the trip to
February 1st. 1991 came around. We got married in a Methodist church in Garden City,
I said, “Excuse me?”
She repeated, “Where’s my gift?”
“Camille, I have borrowed almost $20,000 to give you the ring and wedding you wanted, I have taken the vows as your husband, and I haven’t given you your gift?”
“No,” she said. “It is a tradition that the couple give each other a gift on their wedding day. I gave you your ring today that you did not know was coming. Where’s my gift?” This went on for an hour. I spent the night on the couch in our honeymoon suite.
How did it end up? We were divorced on April 23, 2003.
In April 2005I was now living in Evergreen and working in
Nick was now on a seventy-two-hour psychological hold for attempted suicide.
While Nick was in the hospital, I had several conversations with Camille about Nick coming to live with me in Evergreen. The answer was always the same: “No way in hell!” or “I am willing to talk about it.” I tried to convince her that we should get Nick admitted to an inpatient treatment program for troubled youth. Her answer on that one was maybe, but it never happened voluntarily.
I had no choice: I had to start a custody battle, which meant hiring an attorney and working through the dad’s best friend, the court system. First I wrote to Camille,

Just talked to Nick—he told me about court. Listen, I know you are very much against the idea. Please consider this: every time I talk to Nick his answers about his behavior is “I hate it here!” meaning
For Nick’s sake, let us agree to six months with me? At the end of six months, if no change or worse, we will find next option: treatment, juvenile, outpatient, anything that may work. I am his father and his dad. I also would do several things starting day one:
- He will be back in Scouts to get his Eagle and I will be in it with him
- He will have to leave all his clothes in
- He will be requested to call you each day
- He will begin a twelve-step program meeting!
- He will have to get a part-time job and keep it.
- You and I will discuss visits. I think the first trip I would send Nick to you and you send Sara to me.
- in the summer, we each will have both for three to four weeks.
Six months. Please let me try.

About the Author
Tony is a 53 year old man, father of four, grandfather of two. He currently is totally broke and has spent the last seven years of his life living in other peoples’ basements, extra bedrooms and has relocated about five times cross country to try and find a career and constant income to support him and two of the four children who are still minors. Tony has been married three times of which all three have failed. The first one was the result of two people with serious addictions and the desire to raise healthy and happy kids. The second marriage ended in 2003 however it spans from 1991 through 2009, that relationship is what created the demand from his kids to know the truth. The third marriage which began in 2005 ended in 2007 was the direct cause of Tony’s behavior and all the ugly baggage going on in marriage number two.
Tony is not an author he has never written a book before. In 1997 Tony’s net worth was over 5 million dollars; he was making over $300,000.00 per year. His materialistic life was amazing. In 2002 he had to sell the company business that his dad had started in 1965, in July of that year he went down on his motorcycle and was in coma for thirty days. He has spent the last seven years doing his best with what he had to work with.
