About the Author

Gene E. Herrick is retired from The Associated Press after 28 years as a veteran photographer-writer.  He was born in Columbus, Ohio, and started traveling at an early age. As a journalist, he covered many major news events including the early ministry of Dr.Martin Luther King, Jr., and his later assassination, Rosa Parks and the Montgomery Bus Boycott, many major political conventions, five presidents and nine vice presidents of the U.S., and served as a correspondent in the Korean War.  After retirement in 1971, he went into the field of Developmental Disabilities, where starting group homes was a priority. Later, he was an admissions director in the nursing home industry, and has been an executive director of other non-profit agencies.
