I was left alone in the big, white empty conference hall with Lee Chan. I had an idea that he might want to dominate me. I stood up to wash my hands at the sink in the left corner. The water was warm and nice. I let it run while I got some hand soap. My back was facing Lee Chan. Unexpectedly he said to me. “You know, you are not at all crazy.” I struggled with tears, as I was too afraid to face the reality. I could not even feel the ground anymore. It was as if my blood had run dry. There was silence, and when I did not answer back he began again. “You have a broken heart … you’re suffering from a broken heart.” His gentle words forced themselves violently into my heart. I was stunned and began to breathe hard. I could not conceal my grief . I washed my face and then I turned around to face him.”
“No, I think it’s my sins I’m paying for . ”
“Tell Tony and the Pope … do not tell me that.”
“Why?
“ I don’t believe in god … I’m atheist.” He continued. “We can begin to recall the mind, from the beginning.”
“ Why the mind?” I asked, trembling.
“ That is the key to your broken heart.” He stood up and told me he wanted me to meet some people. We left for downstairs, passing through the dining room. The old nun was there. She remembered me, nodding and looking slyly at me at me. How could she forget me? For her age her memory was still working perfectly. We went through the back door, passing by all the ancient nun graves in the backyard. We went through the fruit garden, took another path, and entered a very unique, white, two-story house. The garden seemed forsaken except for wild roses. We didn’t say much to each other, and I felt that he had imposed the truth on me the very second he met me.

Nita Persaud was born in Guyana South America. She studied journalism. She is now living in the Netherlands with her children. Although she still loves to do social work with people with disabilities, writing, translating language and world history remain her passion.
