‘The screech of brakes, the blaring horn and the screams of Big Anna, the fish lady, brought him back to earth! In his fantasy world he had forgotten to look where he was going and had cut across in front of the route bus. Now this would not normally have been a problem as most drivers in Malta are always ready for the unexpected. Indeed, the unexpected is usually expected! But when it comes to route buses different rules apply. The route bus always has right of way. It is allowed to stop wherever it wishes and for as long as it wishes. The drivers do not have to pay any attention to any other vehicle as they have the right do anything, anytime, anywhere. Now Pawlu should have known this being a mini bus driver himself. Fortunately no-one was hurt. As Pawlu had shot out of Triq Dun Pawl and across the middle of the small roundabout oblivious to all around him,, the bus had set off from its position in the middle of the road. At the same time Big Anna was crossing with her barrow of fish from behind the church. All three met in the middle. Pawlu was flung from his bike, the bus passengers were thrown forward on top of each other, much to the delight of old Gusi who fell on top of Maria Mizzi who he had been in love with since his school days!- and Big Anna’s barrow was overturned spewing fish all over the square. Now the fish lady’s voice was something else. It is said that her voice could be heard in Syracuse on a good day. The yell that she gave out when she saw her fish slithering across the square was earth shattering. It probably even reached Naples.’
