a small halt, and the North Norfolk Railway –a thriving tourist steam railway – was removed some 33 years ago. This book tells the story of that level crossing and
the aspirations of joining up the two railways once again.
The North Norfolk Railway (NNR) has long had a vision of seeing the two lines reconnected so that charter trains bringing more tourists to Sheringham could operate. Locomotives and other rolling stock could be transferred by rail rather than road. (Tourist charter trains are a very rare sight at Sheringham – just two in over thirty years!) The small Network Rail halt is incapable of handling anything longer than two-car trains, the norm on the regular service between
Network Rail and the local authorities now agree that reconnecting the two railways is very desirable on an occasional rather than a regular basis. As the former General Manager I was involved in the railway almost from day one. The gap between the North Norfolk Railway and the national network was a tantalising 300 yards, soon that gap would be bridged. I was fortunate in being present on each occasion the crossing was used.

David Madden has been involved in the North Norfolk Railway since its conception in middle 1960s and was directly involved in building the railway from a closed and derelict line into the thriving heritage steam railway it is today.
