About the Book

This book, ‘A Touch of Chutzpah’, is biographical and is in reality two books woven into one. The first conveys the story of Sophia, an assertive woman, who worked tirelessly to raise herself and her family from crushing poverty to middle class affluence within a few years of arriving penniless and pregnant in England with three preschool age children, the eldest of whom was the author’s father. There followed thirty years in retirement, when she became increasingly reliant upon her children. As Sophia aged, she spiralled slowly into an unacceptable decline, shedding her independence along the way, until finally and against her wishes she was compelled to live in a nursing home where she later died.

About the Author

Arnold Powell was born in London the fourth of five children and graduated from Sheffield University faculty of medicine in 1957.  His experiences since then have included medical practice in Baltimore Maryland USA and Saskatchewan Canada, before settling into general practice in North London in 1963. Seven years later he and his wife, June, established Springdene Nursing and Care Homes, which has grown to provide first-rate care and accommodation for a large number of senior citizens in four modern London nursing homes.

Following a serious illness, which proved to be temporary, he retired from primary health care in 1996 and subsequently began a second career as an author. He and his wife have lived in East Finchley for almost forty years, while close by live their three children and nine grandchildren.

His first published novel was ‘In Search of Henry’, followed in 2007 by ‘Raging Against Time’, an autobiography.

This, his third book, ‘A Touch of Chutzpah’, is biographical and is in reality two books woven into one. The first conveys the story of Sophia, an assertive woman, who worked tirelessly to raise herself and her family from crushing poverty to middle class affluence within a few years of arriving penniless and pregnant in England with three pre-school age children, the eldest of whom was the author’s father. There followed thirty years in retirement, when she became increasingly reliant upon her children. As Sophia aged, she spiralled slowly into an unacceptable decline, shedding her independence along the way, until finally and against her wishes she was compelled to live in a nursing home where she later died.

Dr Powell extends his thanks to the directors of Springdene Nursing and Care Homes Ltd who have very generously sponsored publication of this book.
