Nepphi Mouzzhal is completing her training run in the dusk of a December evening when she is chased by a dog wearing a guide harness. She is cornered by the animal which proves friendly then taken to the path she has just used where she falls over a man's body. The dog disappears and she calls for assistance. This starts a chain of events leading to startling and strange discoveries about her Moroccan roots.

 

Her grandfather Jallil left his mountain home of Moulay Idriss in 1945 after his parents were brutally murdered.and went to live in Tangier where he met his wife to be, Nadya, and where he started a career as a carpenter. He married Nadya and went back to visit his childhood home and to show her the Roman ruins of Volubilis.

 

Jallil, Nadya and their son Jacob left Morocco in 1976 to take up residence in Rottingdean, a peaceful hamlet not far from Brighton. It was there that Jacob is assaulted in Felixstowe and loses his memory then soon after Nadya dies suddenly.

 

The family's tragedies continue when Jacob regains some memory and marries Breanna. Nepphi Mouzzhal is born in 1981 and though an excellent student wishes to pursue a career in the Police. In 1998 her mother Breanna dies as suddenly as Nadya leaving Nepphi with her grandfather Jallil and Jacob her father. Their lives regain some normality until 2002, and a December evening when Nepphi decides to go running.

 


About the Author

BarryDarnell has been writing for ten years or so since a heart attack forced him to give up driving trucks for a living. He has written a series of children's stories with a central character named Sidney the Scammell, a truck used in England and throughout the world as a heavy haulage vehicle. He has had one book published six years ago comprising a collection of short adventures of this truck. Since that time he has been part of a writers circle in Felixstowe England called The Felixstowe Scribblers and has been writing short stories mainly for group consumption but has now completed his first novel, Strictly a family affair. His second book Exchange of Arms is nearing completion.
