Although John Raven is enjoying civilian life with his family and new found friends, some aspects from the times when he was at war always remained: leaving him in the frame of mind that he still could not trust anybody.
Colonel Lewis who was always a good friend and father figure to Raven is in the process of training some of the finest soldiers around to make them become elite soldiers and much respected members of the Green Berets. He is the sort of person that if he begins a task, then it must be completed. However, the Colonel himself knew that his health was beginning to get the better of him and so made his superiors promise that if this task became too much for him then he would only want one man to take the reigns over from him. This was Raven. The Colonel’s superiors were not too impressed with him being out of military action for years now. What they didn’t know was Raven always kept himself fit, so if the unexpected occurred he would be able to deliver.
Sadly Colonel Lewis died of a heart attack leaving his superiors to find Raven. Not only did they have to give him the bad news that his best friend had died, they also had to offer him the position of taking over the task of training Unit Invincible. Tactics had to be used because the legendary soldier was in a vulnerable state of mind.
With already having to absorb the sad news that Colonel Lewis had left this world, he also had to consider the past when confronted by these two people who came to visit him. One of the Officers, Debbie Weller, is a Captain now and has climbed through the ranks on her own merit.
When John and Debbie were both a lot younger these two people were an item, but because of work pressures on both sides they inevitably broke up and both went their separate ways. Raven went onto fight in Vietnam only to return and have a private war against the police. He fought for his Country and brought back American P.O.W’s and even helped his best friend, Colonel Lewis, when he was captured in Afghanistan by the Russian soldiers.
Debbie Weller had been promoted through the ranks to Captain, where she won the respect of the male soldiers. However, through all these years she carried a dark secret. She had a son called John Weller; the father, John Raven, doesn’t know that he exists.
John Weller, a fine soldier, has made the status of becoming an elite soldier, unknown to him just like his father. However, Weller is a bit of a “Jack the Lad” and seems to try his superior’s patience on more than one occasion. This results in Colonel Lewis having to seriously give Weller junior a severe talking to or he would be kicked out of the force. The trouble with Weller junior is he only did things to keep his mother, Captain Weller happy. He wasn’t really committed himself. Captain Weller’s problem is that through her son she can see her long lost love, John J Raven.
Whilst John had time to reflect about his time spent with the late Colonel Lewis, he also had to consider whether or not to fill his position, completing the task that the Colonel had begun. He would question himself whether or not he could do it. He already knew that he was a full blown combat soldier, a fighting machine like no other, so to become the master teaching the pupil was something that was going to be different for him. For the sake of his long lost friend he decided to accept the challenge.
When Raven meets Unit Invincible for the first time Captain Weller stares in anticipation and anxiety as she is driven away. Even though it was from a distance it brought a tear to her eye.
Whilst the intense training had been in process, hostile activities had been going on in the Middle East where Iraq wanted to invade Kuwait and take all of its wealth. Threats that turned out to promises were made to the Americans, creating bad relations between the Western world and Iraq and its ally Russia.
With the crisis becoming very serious, this made both the Secretary of State and the British Foreign Secretary visit Iraq to try and resolve this hostile situation with hopefully a peaceful solution. The Russians and Iraqi’s however had different ideas about what to do with these important people.
When General Luchinski hears that Raven is on the scene it becomes a personal vendetta for him. He cannot forgive Raven for what he did to his dearly loved uncle, Colonel Porborski, when they fought in Afghanistan.
Unit Invincible had completed the training and had been instructed to go on a mission: first, to capture both the Iraqi President and Russian General, and second to kill them if need be. They had become too much of a risk for the rest of the world to accept.
Watching the progress of the mission felt strange for him since he would always be on the watch for anything peculiar happening. To his astonishment he uncovered espionage activities. He found that Unit Invincible had been sold out and caught by the enemy who were waiting for them in a helicopter.
Not pleased by the events Raven was wondering what to do after such a betrayal. Captain Weller had also become a desperate mother, knowing that her son had been captured. Not sure whether he was going to be tortured or killed, she decided to tell Raven about their son. His morale had already become low, now it was to become even lower when he was finally going to find out the truth. The truth that would make this legendary soldier have to come back into combat once more, where this time is for the son he never knew existed. HIS OWN BLOOD!
