About the Book

A POETIC TRIBUTE TO THE YOUNG’UNS WHO LUNCHED WITH OPRAH is a cultural tour.  It is a rhythmic exploration of some of the most enriching young women of our time.  This book is a continuation of the poetry series that began with “A Poetic Tribute To The Legends Who Lunched With Oprah.”

The concept of both books was inspired by Oprahs 2005 Legends Luncheon.   At that luncheon, Oprah designated 25 of her invited guests as Legends - women who have been “a Bridge to Now” for her.  Oprah categorized the remaining women (including herself) as Young’uns – women who have benefited from the work of the Legends.  The list of Young’uns included women such as Michelle Obama, Janet Jackson, Alicia Keys, Kathleen Battle, Suzanne de Passe, Gayle King, Phylicia Rashad, Debbie Allen, Terry McMillan, Pam Grier, and Mariah Carey.

The authors have honored 20 of these young women with poems that reflect their personal contributions.  The intent is to highlight their lives so that the reader is compelled to learn more about each of these women.   Prepare to be enlightened and prepare to be inspired for the Young’uns are here!

About the Author

These sisters and co-authors grew up in Yazoo City, Mississippi.  Poetry has been a natural hobby of both authors.   It has been of great service to them when they wanted to present a special joy, surprise or gift to someone.   They share the belief that a poem whose content is dedicated solely to a specific individual is the greatest gift that one could give.

After graduating from Yazoo City High School, Cassandra obtained a BA in Psychology from Tougaloo College and Revonne obtained a BS in Computer Science from Jackson State University.  Revonne continued her education and later obtained a Masters of Science from Johns Hopkins University.

Upon completion of their undergraduate degrees, they both ventured off to different sectors of the country.  Cassandra relocated to Texas in 1983 where she continues to be a resident.    She has worked over 23 years in the field of law-enforcement.  She set a milestone of her own in 1989 by becoming the first Black female detective in the history of the Harris County Sheriff’s Department in Houston, Texas.  Cassandra is the mother of two, Dominique and Madison.

Revonne relocated to Maryland where she continues to work in the Information Technology field.  She also runs her own business as a mobile Disc Jockey.  She is a wife and mother of two.  She loves her family, music, and writing.
