...Now that Cristal and I, were moving in with my cousins, the thought of being there for more than a visit was horrifying. I honestly said to Cristal, "We are so dead, God help us."
...Imagine, if you would; a closed-up, abandoned room from a scary movie: the roof was covered in spiders and spider-webs that reach from the roof to the bed and to the window curtains. Worms lay curled-up dead on the floor as a result of the heat generated on the galvanized roof, by the sun during the day. A thick layer of dust and rat droppings covered the bed and all other surfaces. And if that is not scary enough, add to it the smell of rat urine and rotten wood. I literally swept the bed, it was so covered.
"Here, put this sheet over it, and the two of you will be fine," said Bernice, as she handed me a sheet. I started to plead with her, "Bernice, can we please be allowed to sleep in the living-room tonight; that would give me time to work on this room? "No, I tell you!" she reiterated, "and that is final."
I covered the bed with the sheet Bernice handed me but thank God, I also had my own sheet, a blanket and one pillow; which I then placed on top. Cristal and I huddled together on the one pillow and we covered with the blanket.
I had plugged a night-light, which gave a glimmer of light across the room. "Good night Mom". "Good night Cristal," I replied with a heavy heart. I knew we could die, from just inhaling the air in the room, not to mention the leptospirosis bed, we were now sleeping on. God help us!
Spaces between the siding boards, created an intense night draft. A few minutes went by. Then I was startled, my heart jumped in my chest and I muffled a scream. There in the shimmer of light..."

About the Book
This mini autobiography in Short Story and Poetry form; is a compilation of miraculous experiences, a testimony of God's love and power in my life. Even while enduring adversity, one can rejoice in God's goodness and 'be inspired'.
The story flow is authentic, but for discretion of characters, fictional names are used occasionally. The opening story of my mother's life saving courage; is a tribute to her memory, in the hope of inspiring more attention to the causes of women. I hope that this account will bring greater understanding, that a woman with strong emotional support; will also have the strength to be there for her children and her family.
About the Author
I, Abi Gale Wayne was born in 1964 to Catherine Gertude Hobbs (1946-1971) and Lionel C. Hill-Ashby (1918-2009).
My mother, Catherine died when I was seven years old, and so most of my childhood was spent with my maternal grandmother, Orin Hobbs; and for a shorter period with my father, Lionel C. Hill-Ashby.
I am thus, the product of two cultural persuasions; 'the moral building stories' of a Christian grandmother, versus 'the wit and determination of the shrewd Businessman, my father.
As a student, I excelled Literature and Visual Arts, but aspiring to be like my father, I pursued studies in Business Management.
