How Did The Islamic Year,A.H Start
In response to many conflicting dating systems, the person who started the Islamic calendar was Caliph Umar ibn al-Khatab (Allah be pleased with him) in 638 C.E (Christian Era); he is the one who decided to make it start in Muharram. He had stated that the event of the Hijrah (when Muhammad (may peace be upon him) left Makkah to establish an Islamic state in Madina, and was a turning point in Islamic history) separated righteousness from wrongfulness, and therefore he ordered the Muslims to adopt that date for their calendar.
The Islamic calendar (or Hijri Calendar denoted as AH or simply H) is a lunar calendar. It contains 12 months that are based on the motion of the moon, and each month consists of either 29 or 30 days.
1 AH (After Hijrah) equates to 622 CE (Christian Era)

We all know as Muslims of praying five times a day, of coming to mosques when the call of prayer is announced, of fasting, an Islamic calendar exists, we read the Qur’an, we greet fellow Muslims with ‘salaam alaikum.’ But exactly how many of us know how all of these started in the first place? There are interesting stories on how they originated, and along with a few other articles, the origins of these events from authentic sources has been compiled. It is hoped that this book will help increase an interest in reading about Islam, thus increasing in ones Islamic Knowledge.
