Sara’s Secret
One beautiful hot summer day, a little girl named Sara woke up. Her daddy was kissing her good-bye on the cheek and reminding her to “Think good thoughts!”
As Sara dressed, she kept thinking, “What does daddy mean by good thoughts?” She knew something was wrong because her daddy seemed sad.
The cabin she and her mommy and daddy were staying in belonged to her uncle Kelly, and they planned to stay all summer. Each day her daddy would drive into the city and she would be free to explore the beautiful area around the cabin.
She walked into the kitchen where her mommy was preparing breakfast. As usual, they kissed good morning, and as usual, her mommy said, “Sara, today is a brand new day!” And as usual, Sara wondered just what that meant.
After breakfast, Sara laced up her red high-top sneakers. She kissed her mommy good-bye as she headed out the door.
On this particular day, Sarah discovered a beautiful pond surrounded by huge, shady trees and wildflowers everywhere. She twirled around looking up to the sky and repeated what her mother had told her: “Today is a brand new day!”
Feeling a surge of happiness she couldn’t describe, she skipped down to the pond. The sky was an icy blue, and the sunlight shining through the trees glittered like diamonds. Sara decided at that very moment that this was a magical place.
She walked closer to the water and spotted a flat rock perfect for sitting. She sat down and looked into the clear, still water. She noticed her reflection—it was so clear it was just like a mirror. She looked into the image of her eyes and started to think about her daddy’s words, “Think good thoughts.”
She wondered if the way everything felt to her—the trees, the warm sun, the pond—was a good thing to think about. She couldn’t wait to ask her daddy.
Then she started thinking about why her daddy seemed so sad. Lately her mommy and daddy had been arguing. Last night after dinner, she heard them yelling at each other about work and what they were going to do with no money coming in.
