I carefully stepped forward to kneel down beside the body of a tiny little girl that had caught my eyes and snapped me out of my madness. Unlike most Sharone, she had blond hair and fair skin. Tightly held in her now still hands was a tiny wooden doll; a doll probably carved for her by a loving father. She looked about the age No-el would have been had I not made so many terrible mistakes. I reached down and gently brushed her hair back out of her face. Pulling a piece of cloth loose from my shirt, I dampened it in a small puddle and carefully wiped the blood from her brow. She had obviously been inside the fallen building as it was smashed down by one of our catapult strikes. Staring at her in silence, I died a little inside and a great grief rose up to consume me for the losses of so many, especially my own little girl. My shoulders shook with heavy spasms of pain as I held the little one’s head in one of my hands while my tears dripped upon her face. “Nat,” Jed spoke softly, laying a heavy hand on my shoulder. “Yes?” I muttered, unwilling to be drawn away from the child and my grief. “Will you come with me? Geof wants to see you.” “Geof?” I asked, perplexed. “Yes, he’s dying,” he replied sadly.

About the Author
Charles Buchanan is a lifetime martial artist whose mastery of the sword has earned him the rank of teacher. He is a transplanted Texan having moved to Colorado in 1997 where he now works for the Department of Corrections. His love of life and adventure leads him into the back country and mountains of Colorado on what others would probably call hair brained adventures. Usually hiking alone, he seeks ideas for his stories on mountain tops and on the shores of high country lakes. His Native American heritage fills him with the need for such excursions and serves as the basis for the Kylari people about whom he writes.
