Jordan’s First Day of School is a humorous look at what a mom experiences as she sends her son to school for the first time. While Jordan tries to enjoy his first day of school, his mother has trouble letting go. 

This enduring story features brightly colored illustrations by youth illustrator, Kevin Wilkie.

About the Author

Darlene P. Walker is the Publisher of VOICES Magazine, a children’s magazine written by and for children.  She has spent most of her life creating venues for children’s voices to be heard.  She also is the founder of a journalism program for youth and has spent over 15 years working with young people and their parents.  Her journalism program was the recipient of The Maryland Recreation and Parks Association, “Innovative Programming Award” in 2003.

Ms. Walker has been featured on several television and radio talk shows.  She has served as a consultant to the Baltimore County Public Schools, and has developed programs and youth conferences for several organizations.  As a youth advocate, Ms. Walker has sat on the boards of John Hopkins Center for Adolescent Health and Disease Prevention, and the University of Maryland’s Community Law in Action.  She continues to serve as a consultant to several organizations developing programs that help promote the voices of our youth and working on behalf of youth throughout the country. 

She is the mother of three, and has used the culmination of her experiences to produce her first book that draws upon both the parents’ and child’s experiences of the first day of school.   Her desire to give youth a voice also led her to select young illustrator, Kevin Lamar Wilkie, son of a fellow alumnus from Lincoln University,  as the illustrator of this book.
