That Morning at the
After breakfast the four hiked back to the sandy beach and each returned to the same fishing spot. Danny and John began casting and catching brown and rainbow trout - about one every ten minutes. Most were average size, some were large, and a few were keepers that would become lunch and dinner. Running Fox threw out Sonya’s line and pleaded with her, “Lady, don’t do anything. Just let if float along. Please.” Several times a trout hit her lure, and with Fox’s help she landed a few. Each time one hit she’d squeal and shout, “I got another one!”
Sonya refused to touch them, much less attempt to get the fish off the hook. Rather, she’d bat her eyes at Fox and reply, “Get it off for me.”
Mid morning Fox broke out the beer. As he handed one to Danny he whispered, “Drink slowly. Pour some of it out. I don’t want you drunk.”
Danny asked in a low voice so that John could not hear, “When are you going to kill John? We want it over……”
Fox cut his sentence short with a cold reply, “When I know the time is right.”
When Fox took a beer to Sonya, he advised her to do the same. “Don’t drink very much,” he whispered. “Just pretend.”
“I want it done soon,” Sonya demanded in a low frigid whisper.
“Not now. After a while. I want him drunk.”
She retorted in the same voice, “Kill him now.”
Fox didn’t waver. He was growing impatient with her pushiness and responded in an assertive tone, “Lady, when I kill somebody, I do it when I have the advantage and on my terms. Understand?” He pointed to himself and stressed his words as he spoke.
For once, someone backed Sonya down. She shrunk back and agreed, “Yeah. Your terms.”
He left her, waded over to John, and handed him a beer. John took the beer and asked, “When are you going to kill Danny Boy over there?”
“Soon. When I have a chance for a clean kill. I don’t like gut shots or wounded animals, so to speak. Too messy. I kill fast and with one shot,” Fox replied with no emotion.
John growled, “Kill that womanizing thief now! Then kill that harlot wife of mine for having an affair with him!”
Fox didn’t buckle to John’s demand. He replied calmly and assertively, "Not yet.”

Presently, he and his wife teach Adult Literacy, Adult Basic Education, and GED classes at a correctional facility. While teaching at the prison, he conducts a Creative Writing Class for the inmates. Although much of his writings are history and math lessons, he writes short stories in his spare time. Kristina is his fourth short story, but his first one to have published.
