About the Book
Although "Diary of a Conquistador" is a novel, all events, dates and the names of the main
characters in the Spanish conquest of the Inka Empire are historical facts.
The novel tries to illustrate the gradually emerging conflicts within the Spanish ranks, highlighting
occasional Spanish bewilderment about Inka Culture, and also the fatally flawed strategy of Inka
rulers to defend their Imperium.
The initial band of less than two hundred Spaniards had certainly inflicted heavy defeats on Inka
armies less than eighteen months of its arrival, however, the ultimate destruction of the Empire
was not caused by slaughtering the native population but by all the European diseases the Spanish
have brought along with them.
About the Author
The author was born in 1944 in Stuttgart, Germany and lives with his English wife and two adult
sons in Berkshire, United Kingdom.
After having been diagnosed with Meningoma in 1993, he promised himself to realise his ambition
and travel for an extended period to Latin America should he be lucky enough to survive the
operation on his brain.
As he had a life-long fascination with the Inka, he decided to concentrate his travel efforts on
the countries of Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia, the three main countries of the Inka Empire in which
he hoped to gather as much information as it was possible for a tourist.
The results of his research are expressed in this novel.
