Greenwood Bottom was two blocks from the alley, on the main highway. It was my second home; I was either in the pool room, the club, or just hanging around on the street. Only going home to eat, or after the poolroom and club had closed. The Bottom had a bad reputation, and everyone felt I was wasting my life away, heading for trouble.
To me, my life had been wasted in school. After seven terms I still couldn't read or write. I was a problem at home, couldn't be helped in school, and being told I was wasting my life away. I'm sure there had been concern, but I didn't know anything else to do. No one was telling me how to make my life better, only criticizing.
There were times I chose to go hungry rather than going home having to face daddy. He not only hated me spending so much time in the Bottom, he hated me for coming to eat, as if I was working. At times I walked a few blocks to the bakery, where they threw out day old baked goods.

This book is about a child going through childhood seeing nothing but gloom. You will feel his heartaches while being treated as an ugly duckling at home, and humiliated at school. Mostly because he was a middle child with a learning disability. Even though mistreated, he felt loved simply because he had not been locked away in a closet or basement. The book tells how insensitive the educational system was towards children with problems. You will also be taken through his troubled teen and young adult years. His plight of being forced to live on the streets, and how he over came into manhood.

This author is sure to reach a wide range of readers, especially those before hooked on phonics, parents of children not performing at grade level and children who may be struggling in home or school. "Benny" was written by a man who as a child had been written off as someone who would never be able to learn to read, write or live a productive life But today at sixty ,he has written the heart-rending story of his life. He has explicitly revealed family skeletons as well as deep and touching tragedies he endured, and is openly sharing them with you.
In my opinion he had total assurance, exposing himself to possible derision, but unconcerned knowing that after you have read "Benny" you will have been affected for the better . I therefore, urge you to read his book "Benny" and take comfort in his accomplishments.
