Nothing in the world seemed more likely to cheer me up than a stroll through the park with my brother. My father was dead, my mother was breaking down, and my brother was the only sane one around to talk to. I walked back the hall of our house toward my brother’s room. Wrapping my hand around his golden door knob, I didn’t bother to knock. I knew what he would be doing.
I pulled on the door and saw him lying on his bed, staring at the ceiling. He turned his head slightly when he heard the door opening.
“Hey, sis.” His voice sounded hoarse, and his eyes were slightly bloodshot, making it obvious that he had been crying, or was on the verge.
“You okay? What are you doing?” I knew the answer that awaited.
“Thinking.”
I didn’t ask about what--his dark blue eyes always gave away what he was feeling. He was thinking about Dad--the same thing I had been thinking about for the past two weeks. The same thought that was making mom completely lose her sanity. And we were both worried about her, but we couldn’t talk about it. At least not yet. None of us were really ready. None of us were ready to admit that he was gone. We would never see him again. We were in complete denial, and weren’t ready to let go yet.

I don't know what I would've done without Ryan in my life. My brother was the only thing pulling me through, even though he was having an even tougher time with the death of Dad than I was. Mom was breaking down, never leaving her room, not caring about either of us. Dad died in a car crash, or so we were told. But that's not the truth..yet nothing ever is what it seems, is it? About the Author
Alaina Richardson is a fourteen year old freshman at the Moshannon Valley Junior Senior high school. She lives in Houtzdale, Pennsylvania in the small town of Sanborn with both of her parents. Alaina has always been interested in writing without any particular person to influence her, although her older brother inspired her to take her own path in life and follow her dream. Broken Bonds is her first published book. She started out writing poems and songs, only to slowly advance into larger works. She doesn't have a path set out for her life yet, but definitely plans to keep writing. She goes by her faith and plans to do with her life whatever God leads her to do.
